Raku is a unique process where pottery is fired in a kiln reaching upwards of 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. Upon reaching the desired temperature, the glowing red pottery with molten glazes are removed from the hot kiln with tongs and allowed to briefly cool before being placed into a metal container of newspaper. For a moment the material ignites into flame before being covered with a lid to restrict all oxygen. The lack of oxygen causes the flames to smolder; and the hot piece then cools in a smoky atmosphere creating rare and unique patterns.
